This photo taken at a Northern Wisconsin home shows a plumbing vent stack that terminates next to the attic gable vent. A plumbing vent stack serves a couple of purposes. One, is to equalize the air pressure in the drain / sewage pipes so that the water / sewage will drain properly out of the house. Two, it releases sewage gas / odors into the atmosphere. Usually, plumbing vent pipes / stacks will terminate a few feet above the roof of a house. The owner of this home decided to convert the rear porch into a bathroom and needed a plumbing vent for the new drainage pipes. The inspector / photo taker of this picture was quoted as saying "This installation "stinks", at least in the attic it does."
